I expect many authors have been asked by family, friends, fans or strangers, 'Where do you write? In your garret?' I'm lucky enough to reply, 'Yes!'
Earlier last year I found a studio for rent on the top floor of a renovated building in the old town in Porto. It is a perfect space for writing, with a view over the rooftops to the cathedral. I didn't connect to the internet, so have no distractions, except the bells of the Torre dos Clérigos chiming the hour and the seagulls calling to each other—perhaps the inspiration for the opening of the next Ramzi mystery, Shadows in Essaouira.
